A video clip, which purportedly depicted a group of naturists engaging in 'nude sports games' on Penang island, appeared on video sharing site Vimeo. But questions are now being asked as various Malaysian laws have been broken, and nudism goes against local sensitivities. Three suspects have surrendered to Malaysian police over their participation in a nudist sports event, a state police chief says. The suspects, including the alleged organiser, surrendered were detained while undergoing investigation, according to Penang police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi. Two other suspects surrendered to the police earlier in the week, and were released on bail after giving statements, Abdul Rahim said on Sunday. Public nudity is a crime in Malaysia and the suspects face charges of "committing a gesture intended to insult the modesty of a person", a crime punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine or both. The controversy began after a video titled Penang Nude Sports Games was uploaded two weeks ago to the video-sharing website Vimeo, triggering an uproar in the conservative predominantly Muslim Malaysian society. Police are looking for 17 people who allegedly participated in the event, including seven Malaysians, four Singaporeans, two Burmese, a Filipino and an Indian.

The saga dealt a huge blow and was a great setback to the nudist movement in Malaysia and Singapore which aimed to promote acceptance of naturism in the two countries. One woman has been arrested and more than a dozen are being sought by Malaysian authorities after images of a nudist sports festival triggered outrage in the Muslim-majority country. A video of the gathering, called the "Nude Sport Games ," first appeared on social media earlier this week and went viral. It shows participants frolicking on a secluded Penang beach in late May, engaged in a range of activities including body painting, dancing, relay races and various other contests, all in the nude.
